CLAM ON!

It's official, the IRL Clam project is full steam ahead!! Thanks to Dick's Sporting Goods, Star Brite and CCA Music City, we've kicked off the project with $17,000 towards our $122,205 goal to put 2,000,000 clams back into the Indian River Lagoon system. As we begin scheduling fundraising presentations for the project, the Clam Team is planning our first IRL field campaign - a visit to the estuary to assess current clam populations and identify historic clam communities focusing on the Indian River and Banana River between Titusville and Sebastian. Dr. Todd Osborne, Ph.D. from The Whitney Labs at the University of Florida in St. Augustine, says his laboratory is ready to start collecting a brood stock of the targeted species and potentially others if determined beneficial to the clam restoration objectives. CLAM PROJECT FUNDRAISER

OVER 325,000 CLAMS RELEASED

The IRL Clam Project is moving fast releasing over 2 million clams into the Indian River this summer. The Clam Team gathered at River Rocks in Rockledge, Florida to release 60,000 one inch clams. These new clams were raised in St. Augustine at Whitney Labs and will join the 275,000 clams that were released earlier. The bi-valves will begin filtering and improving the water quality of the Indian River. The clam team had all members on hand including Whitney Labs , CCA Florida , FWC and MRC to name a few. IRL CLAM PROJECT WINS AWARD

The IRL Clam Restoration Project won Project of the Year at the 19th Annual Marine Resources Council Conservation Achievement Awards Dinner. The event was held Saturday, February 22 on Florida's Space Coast to honor conservation projects which are making a difference. Capt Blair Wiggins from Addictive Fishing Television and Frank Gidus from CCA Florida accepted the award on behalf of the clam team. It has been an incredible year for the Indian River Lagoon Clam Project reaching our fundraising goal to help Whitney Labs in St. Augustine spawn 4 million clams - twice as many clams as originally proposed. The project is full steam ahead with a planned release of the first generation of clams in the Indian River this spring.
